Graduate Student Opportunities

  • StudentsStudent Awards: SEAGEP partners with faculty and Departments to provide awards to U.S. citizens and permanent residents in support of their goal of earning a Ph.D. in science, engineering, or mathematics, and becoming a member of the Professoriate. Faculty members may apply for a SEAGEP award on behalf of a student through the on-line application. Students selected to receive an award also receive tuition waivers for one year.

  • Travel Funding for Attending Conferences: Students may apply [PDF Form] for sponsorship to attend conferences and professional meetings. Senior students may ask for support to travel to make presentations and first year students may apply for support to attend a more general meeting such as the Society of Black Physicists or Hispanic Engineering Society, to allow them to begin networking early in their academic career.
  • International Research Internships: In collaboration with their faculty advisors, students may submit a proposal to participate in an international research internship. SEAGEP works in partnership with the Latin American and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions, and many other international collaborations are available.
  • Career Shadowing Program: Students may apply for funding to support travel to shadow a faculty member at one of the SEAGEP partner institutions. In this way, students will learn about alternate types of faculty placements. Click here to apply
  • SEAGEP Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Minority Professionals Network: SEAGEP offers a seminar series through video-conferencing that provides students with information on topics such as How to Get Published, How to Select a Committee, Finding the first Faculty Position, etc. Topics
  • Annual Meeting: May 12-14 at the University of Florida. The meeting will offer a variety of professional development workshops on topics relevant to those considering an academic career, including seminars about intercultural communications, dealing with conflicts, writing your CV and more. Undergraduate Student Opportunities

  • StudentsCampus Research Opportunities: Undergraduate STEM students at FGLSAMP institutions may apply to conduct research at their home institution through the SEAGEP Research Experience for Undergraduates. Download and complete the application form and turn it in to your local AMP Coordinator. If you have questions please contact your local AMP Coordinator.
  • Campus Visitation: SEAGEP hosts two campus visitations programs each year for prospective students. Visiting students participate in laboratory tours, seminars on practical issues involved in preparing for graduate school, and meet with representatives from the departments to discuss prerequisites. They also meet with minority graduate students.
  • Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU): SEAGEP offers students an exceptional 10-week residential research experience. Students are placed in research labs and work alongside faculty and graduate students on a project related to their career goals. During this program, students participate in a seminar series, industry tours, and communication workshops. Seminars include student panels discussing topics including what to expect from graduate school, how to chose a graduate program, and how to apply. At the conclusion of the program, students turn in a research paper and make an oral presentation to help them improve their oral and written communications skills.   • International REU: An Alliance-wide International Undergraduate Research Experience provides students with the opportunity to conduct summer research at a variety of research institutions. In addition to LACCEI institutions, there are many existing global research collaborations at each of the primary partners that are available.
  • AMP Meetings & Activities: The secondary partners prepare students with the academic rigor and skills necessary for success in their chosen program. Activities include undergraduate research, graduate school preparation workshops and seminars, graduate school visits, maintaining a student portfolio, taking the GRE, attending a "Transitioning to Graduate School" workshop, and applying to graduate school.
